The way to the driving licence

The most important steps summarized!

Success

Item 1
Emergency helper course

Anyone registering for a category A, A1, ( motorcycle) B or B1 (CAR) learner's licence must prove that they have completed the course on life-saving emergency measures (emergency aid course).

The course must be conducted by a recognised organisation and must not have taken place more than 6 years ago. e.g. Flying Instructors

Item 2
Driving licence

Application forms for a learner's permit can be obtained from the road traffic office in your canton of residence.

Zurich Road Traffic Office

In various cantons, the forms are also available from city/community administrations or police stations.

1. fill out the form completely and answer all questions

2. carry out an eye test with an ophthalmologist or in an approved optician's shop. The result is entered directly on the application form. Eye tests must not be older than 24 months.

3. 1 or 2 coloured passport photos are required for registration.

4. the residents' registration office of the place of residence must confirm your identity when you submit your application for the first time.

Item 3
Theory exam

With the help of flashcards and books you can easily learn the theory on the go.

Once you have been admitted to the theory test, you are entitled to take the theory test.

After passing the theory test and reaching the minimum age, you will receive your learner's permit by post.

Item 4
Driving lessons with the L

Now you are entitled to book lessons with your driving instructor. From my experience it is always good to book a double lesson at the beginning.

Tip: Take always an emergency book with you, so you can note a lot of things and so your parents or your passenger know what to do!

Item 5
Traffic instruction (VKU)

You'll be taking traffic lessons with a driving instructor. Make sure that you do it at the beginning of your driving lessons. Without the confirmation of the VKU, no test date is bookable!

Item 6
Motrorad

Basic Motorcycle Course:
125 ccm / 11 kW = 3 courses a 4 hrs. (12 hours)
Everything over 11 - 35 kW = 3 courses of 4 hours each (12 hours)

You complete the basic practical training with a driving instructor within 4 months. The licence is extended by 12 months.

Attention: If you don't have a driving licence B (car) you have to show all points (1-3)!

Item 7
Practical examination

Now it's time for the test! With your driving instructor, you usually have about 6 weeks before your chosen test location an appointment agreed. This goes between 40 and 50 minutes.

Item 8
Further education course (WAB)

The mandatory WAB courses are coming up.
After passing their driving test, new drivers still lack an important part of their training before they proudly hold their final driving licence for cars and motorcycles in their hands: The continuing education course is designed to improve the ability of new drivers to recognize and avoid dangerous traffic situations before they arise. There are numerous providers in each canton from which you can choose as a candidate.
